Les grands maîtres ont exploité le champ de l’invention poétique avec un tel succès, qu’à peine reste-t-il à glâner sur leurs traces quelques rares débris. Désormais la moisson est faite. Les idées religieuses ont trouvé depuis longtemps leur forme définitive … En dehors de ces deux interprétations suprêmes, qu’y a-t-il à tenter? L’analyse des évènements purement humaines, la représentation des faits au point de vue purement dramatique et sous leur aspect, non le plus grandiose, mais le plus probable. Un enseignement direct, et jusqu’à un certain point familier, voilà ce qui s’appropriera le mieux aux conditions de l’art moderne, aux besoins intellectuels de notre époque.

Delaroche goes perhaps the honor of having made that advance understandable.
